Personal Learning Aims (link to AR & PDP)

To integrate the practical experimental component in my teaching process

To introduce the concept of heat movement to the students and make sure that they understand it, as well as understanding the states of matter

Learning Outcomes (refer to ADEC document)

4PW1 Describe the movement of heat and how it can be slowed

Activity 1

The snowman cake

Activity 2

 Ice in the cup experiment

Activity 3

Activity 4

Supporting activities differentiated to three ability levels

Activity 1                                              (Monitor ___________)

Description (students will …. / teacher will)

the teacher will start a powerpoint presentation to introduce the three states of matter and how heat movement changes them.

Activity will target all levels of the class.

Activity 2                                              (Monitor ___________)

Description (students will …. / teacher will)

This activity is the main activity to explain the concept of heat movement. The teacher will ask the students to divide into 5 groups and choose a leader in one minute. Then the leaders will be asked to come and pick a basket full of experimental tools and instructions sheet. Then the teacher will pass around the groups and choose the group reporter and explain to each of them how to carry out the experiment and how to write the sheet.   The experiment is to put ice in 4 plastic cups,  the first cup is to be covered with fabric, the second is to be covered with aluminum, the third is to be covered with cling wrap and the last is without any cover. Thermometers are to be put in the cups and the students are to notice the temperature rise, and in the sheet they have  to write the starting temperature and the temperature after 5 minutes. during the experiment, the teacher will pass around the groups and help them, and explain, also, the teacher will ask the students the questions in the sheet and make sure that they understand the idea  of the experiment.

Activity will target all levels of the class

Comments

Introduction

the students will be asked what they think about the covered piece, if it will melt by the end of class time or not.  The students will be asked to write down their guesses on a small paper with their name on it, and then put in the jar till the end of class.

The teacher will first start the class by brining in a snowman cake, and cutting a small portion of it and covering it with a piece of fabric.

This opening is motivative as the students like cake, and it will stimulate their critical thinking an knowledge and will make them wait to see the results.

Activity 1

The students will learn through visual aid, the colorful presentation will catch their eyes and keep them focused

The teacher will introduce the three states of matter  and how heat movement affect them. The teacher will explain how to use thermomemters and how can heat movement be slowed.

This will prepare the students to understand the main concept of the lesson.

Transitions

Within one minute they have to be divided to 5 groups and choose their leaders

The teacher will count from one to 10 slowly until the groups divide and settle down

Activity 2 (if applicable)

the teacher will pass around the

groups and choose the group reporter and explain to each of them how to carry out the experiment and how to write the sheet.

During the experiment, the teacher will pass around the groups and help them, and explain, also, the teacher will ask the students the questions in the sheet and make sure that they understand the idea  of the experiment.

the leaders will be asked to come and pick a basket full of experimental tools and instructions sheet.

Conclusion

Students will check their answers on the powerpoint, and will listen to the teacher’s conclusion about the lesson, and will then check the guesses and check the cake, and then eat it.

The teacher will use the powerpoint to put up the answers and the groups which answered right will be rewarded by points on the class dojo.

Then the teacher will choose 3 answers out of the jar and read them out loud, then will show them the cake to check if their guesses were right or wrong. Then  the teacher will distribute the cake.
